ONE DAY IN THE LIFE OF A NATION OF 1.1 BILLION PEOPLE
Question : how often have you seen this happen ?. No points for guessing the answer. It’s NEVER before.
We are a nation of 1.1 billion people. Yet we cannot produce hundred athletes who can win us medals in the Olympics. We cannot produce twenty-three players to represent India in the FIFA world cup. We cannot produce players who can win us grand slam tournament. We cannot produce drivers who can stand on the same podium as Kimi Raikonnen or Valentino Rossi. We cannot produce a cricket team which is the best in the world, even though BCCI is one of the strongest sporting body in the world.
In the other countries ,which fare nicely in these games, the government takes an active part in preparing sportspersons. They consider it as their national pride. There are universities dedicated only to sports with world-class training facilities, which are funded by the governments. But in our country that is not going to happen in the very near future, even though India will be hosting something as big as the COMMONWEALTH games in 2010. And what is the reason behind it ? Simple. Our politician’s are too busy blocking highways, creating hindu-muslim riots, withdrawing support from the center, killing innocent people over some few acres of land, making big promises in times of election, so on and so forth………
And not to forget that we have a union sports minister, who very recently asked, “who is Prakash Padukone?” Please someone go and tell him that Praksh Padukone is the first All England Badminton Champion from India.
So how do we get more Abhinav Bindra’s to bring us more medals?. The only way it can happen is if the government takes an active part. Lets see what happens. I am surely hoping for a spirited 2010 commonwealth games. What about you ?

THE ASSIGNMENT
PROLOGUE
After the end of COLD WAR the world seemed to be going towards an environment of peace and mutual collaboration. But the problem is that the COLD WAR never ended. Although the world power had shifted from THE KREMLIN to THE PENTAGON, yet the OVAL OFFICE was never at ease. It knew that he power was slowly but painfully shifting back to the east. And the biggest problem was, Russia was involved in it.
And supporting Russia was China and India, the two Asian power horses. It’s interesting to know how India rose to power. At the turn of the millennium India was still a developing country. 30 years on, it is an economic military and space powerhouse. With the second largest army and the air force coming third only to U.S.A and Russia, it is a military superpower.
On the other hand was the U.S.A, the current world leader. With England, France and Pakistan, it had powerful allies. But its greatest mistake was that it had managed to enrage the gulf countries, especially after the Iraq and Iran incidents. It could prove costly. Rather the gulf was already prompted in supporting the east.
OCTOBER 2030
PART 1
A strong well-built man was taking his position atop the KREMLIN. The plan was simple. Take position. Identify and “shoot” targets. Get back to the river. Leave. It couldn’t possibly go wrong. But it was destined to go wrong.
He was a handsome man. Elisabeth always said so. He wanted to go back to her. It would be a life of retirement. Ten million dollars for his last assignment. At 35, he was the most successful HITMAN of his organization. He received a message in his pager: “Targets arriving. 20 minutes. Get ready”
He was looking forward to this. Three high profile targets. He was of course unperturbed by the might of Russian security spetsnaze’s patrolling the area and the snipers covering it. There was no sniper cover on the roof. His only worry was that his targets were the presidents and prime ministers of Russia India and china.
HITMAN did not want to do this job. Not that he was afraid. But he was disturbed.
If this summit went on then the power would invariably shift back to the east. And U.S.A would d anything to get it back. Even a world war. And with gulf support there can only be one winner. From then on there was no stopping communism from spreading. So he was this job to stop a potential war. He was doing it for humanity. His guess was that either the USA or Pakistan had handed out this job to the organization. And he was the best in business
He saw the limousines arriving. But there were four instead of three. He was confused. The fourth one was of the German chancellor.
PART 2
Historians say that the German was the best in the world during WW-2. It is no different today. The German intelligence had intercepted a message, which went like this:
“To HITMAN
Assignment confirmed.
Targets: Heads of nations
Occasion: Russian summit
Place: Kremlin”
Now comes the ELIMINATOR. Code name of course. He was a product of German intelligence. A sniper specialist. A brilliant shooter. A young happy go lucky man. 22 to be precise. And he had more girlfriends than he could remember. But no less efficient than the HITMAN.
He was also taking his position, not on the KREMLIN, but on another building overlooking the KREMLIN.
The German intelligence had suggested that they send a team to neutralize the HITMAN. But the chancellor only knew well enough that the organization was too strong to be deterred by the loss of a single HITMAN. Even if he is the best. The ELIMINATOR was his brainchild. The ELIMINATOR was not worried much. His target was simple and he had already taken his position. His only worry was the range. Could he get it correctly????
After what seemed to be an eternity, one of the snipers fired. But the summit did not stop. On went the summit. The most powerful alliance ever. Russia China Germany India.
No one knew anything. No one even cared. The HITMAN had been ELIMINATED.
The ELIMINATOR had been sleeping with Celina for too long. Time for a change.
A tear rolled down the eyes of Elizabeth. Was it for the HITMAN. Or was it for HUMANITY?????
P.S- this is pure fiction and no resemblance should be made with the real world.

THE DEFINITION OF A GOOD BOY
Sometime back I was browsing through a book by SHUKANTO BHATTACHARJEE and stumbled upon this poem. Well he was not a literary genius as RABINDRANATH or SARAT CHANDRA ,still this poem is good. In this poem he brings out the definition of a “good boy” ,or rather brings out the way in which we define a good boy. Here is what it says.
There was once a boy. Lets call him RAVI. He came from a mediocre family. Ravi probably had a hectic childhood. He didn’t have toys to play with , instead he accompanied his father to work. But he was small and couldn’t realize why he had to go with his father when all others of his age were busy having fun. And so he started disobeying. He wasn’t great in studies yet he was popular amongst his friends, and he had a lot of them. Still he managed to keep a good heart.
And then there was this boy. Coming from a rich family, VINOD got everything a child can possibly ask for. He went to the best of schools, rode luxurious Cars on the way. Never gave a second thought after shouting at his servants. Was great in studies and behaved properly amongst his “class of people”. All ingredients of a good boy.
They were both of the same age. One, went on to look after his fathers business, and the other did not have anything to look after. One graduated from the best college of the city, the other went to a college which his father could afford. One had work to do, the other had no work, except “rock e bose adda dewa”---sitting and chatting with friends. They did not know each other, until this day, when they were destined to meet.
Ravi was sitting and doing his usual job, chatting with friends. An old man was crossing the street. Suddenly this man fell down and Ravi rushed to help him. The man needed immediate medication. Ravi was searching for a taxi, when he saw a car coming. He stopped it and went to the backseat to ask for help. Vinod looked at his watch and said to the driver, “I am getting late, go.” Eventually Ravi got a taxi and helped the man.
Yet, to the world, Vinod is a good boy Ravi is not. Because, Ravi was sitting and chatting with friends and helped the old man. And Vinod was wearing designer clothes, riding cars, and had no time to help a sick old man. Because, Ravi belonged to a mediocre family and Vinod was the son of a powerful businessman.
When we first entered our physics practical class, after a long and boring lecture, this is what sir had to say and conclude the class, “you are B1 group, known to have good students. All of you are good students, but try to be a good boy. The class is dismissed for today ”
